Al Deeds, just 22 years old, wondered if he could clear away all the traces of his life, to rebuild upon an empty foundation. Enter, Danton Oskar Purle.
Al and Danton hitchhike to Mr. Harold's house, encountering road refugees led by Gypsy, a Chicagoan on the run from a recent disaster.
Mr. Harold, Al's stepfather, lives with Braun, an unprincipled teen and High School student, who is Al's alcohol-loving brother. Mr. Harold welcomes Al into his home, only requesting that he prevent Braun from drug dealing during their stay.
Al gets a job that keeps him away from Mr. Harold's home, allowing Danton and Braun to set up a daytime operation: the sale of LSD and cannabis.
Al and Danton prepare for their departure by living rent-free at Mr. Harold's house. When Al goes off to earn money in a Gold Country hotel and bar, Danton and Braun peddle cannabis and LSD, while avoiding Mr. Harold's not very watchful eye.
EMILE LEGRAND, fresh out of junior college, has been sent to San Francisco to find his long, lost brother, Beauregard. Emile barely remembers Beau, so he lingers in coffee shops until he encounters a woman who has a sarcastic response to his leering appreciation of her fleshy assets by introducing the ill-fated young man into the far side of the entertainment industry: adult films. A few blocks away from Emile’s favorite coffee shop, BUDDY DEE, lives - scarcely surviving as an illustrator - in a tiny studio apartment in Polk Gulch. Buddy is looking for a new career and a fresh way of looking at life and love. MIKKA Y is an internationally famous adult film star who brings Emile into her life to help with satanic rituals, then discovers Buddy to help raise her mostly feral three year old, Lily. WILD HORSES is the story of the intermingling lives of professional lovers as they look for love in all the wrong places.
Emile finds more complicated ways to earn a living.
No longer at the House of Hercules, Buddy discovers a new position.
Life continues in the flat on Polk Street. Buddy moves in, Emile joins Barney for a dinner out of 14th century England, and Mikka plans a party with Grace.
Mikka forgathers friends, fans, and inoffensive foes to her flat for frolic, fun, and something fearful.
In the aftermath of Mikka's party we discover the fate of the long, lost Beauregard LeGrand.
